of the Life of the
Virgin Mary
The
ten oval paintings by the renowned artist of New Spain, José
de Ibarra (1688–1756) form a series about the life of Mary,
a recurring theme in colonial Mexican art due to the Marian devotion
professed by the parishioners of this continent. Two oil paintings
on copper sheeting by Baltasar de Echave Ibía (1585–1640)
are also on display here. This artist forms part of a dynasty of
master painters who carried out their work in Mexico. |
