| Most
of the works displayed here represent Saint Michael Archangel, captain
of the celestial militia, protector of Mary and the one who in the
Last Judgment will weigh the souls to separate the righteous from
the sinners. In the art of New Spain, he is usually shown wearing
a warrior’s garb, with the sun, moon and stars on his chest.
As attributes, he might carry a balance, a white flag with a red
cross (as the celestial and triumphant flag-bearer), or a flaming
or metal sword. In New Spain, devotion to Saint Michael Archangel
was widespread.
