The
lives of the saints have been used as educational tools since early
Christian times. Their veneration has been a characteristic of the
Catholic Church throughout its history.
The Counter-Reform placed an emphasis on the development of such
devotional practices among the masses, because it considered the
saints to be role models of evangelical life. In New Spain, the
indigenous church made an effort to continue this type of spirituality
and discovered in the language of baroque painting the perfect vehicle
for the propagation of the devotion to the saints. |
