Room
of the Immaculate Conception
One
of the Catholic Church’s basic ideas is to present the idea
of Mary not only as a Virgin before, during and after the birth
of Christ, but as a completely pure being from the moment of her
conception.
Painting played an important role in the diffusion of this mystery
(which was only established as an act of faith in 1854) by means
of images such as those seen in this gallery: images representing
a nubile Mary dressed in a white shift and a celestial shawl,
accompanied by the symbols of purity which originate for the most
part in the Song of Songs.
