Guadalupan
Print Gallery

The space once occupied
by the now nonexistent Lorenzo Boturini Library is home to a collection
of prints from different eras. For its ease of reproduction and
handling, printmaking was an efficient vehicle for the propagation
of doctrine and grassroots religious practices.
In
this room we can view prints done on paper from plates etched in
copper or other metals (chalcographs), in wood (xylographs) or in
stone (lithographs). Realized by Samuel Stradanus in 1615, the very
first print depicting the Virgin of Guadalupe surrounded by representations
of the eight miracles is one of the works on display here. |
