The
Museum’s rear stairwell contains large canvases by Sebastián
[López] de Arteaga (1610–1752), donated by the Carmelites,
making an interesting exhibition of baroque ars moriendi
that is set up against the transitory nature of life.
A monumental
sixteenth-century atrial cross that stood for a long time near the
old Basilica, and was later moved to the “Chapel of Indians,”
can now be seen in the Museum courtyard. Carved from stone, the
cross features symbols from the passion of Christ, in such a way
as to evoke the syncretism between Christian and pre-Hispanic art.
